Siloé, Cali-Colombia
God has led us to this community of such great need. This sector has the highest rate of illiteracy in the entire city of Cali and 27% of the children live in extreme poverty where their families make less then $2 per day. The community Siloé has more than 100,000 inhabitants, 20,000 of whom are children. For 50+ years refugees have come here, escaping guerrilla armies in the countryside. Cali has been the go-to city for hundreds of thousands of refugees, mostly living in informal settlements like the one in Siloé. Today the sector is in great need, especially the children. Around 5,500 children don't attend school and about 1,200 minors between the ages of 5-17 are forced into labor. Many children from the age of 6 start inhaling shoe glue or "solution" as it’s known in the streets, in order relieve their hunger.
